Kim Yong-sun (Korean: 김용선), commonly known by her stage name Solar (Korean: 솔라), is the leader of South Korean girl group MAMAMOO, and is in charge of the group's main vocals. Additionally, she is a member of MAMAMOO's official sub-unit MAMAMOO+.
Solar started her solo career on April 23, 2020 with the single album SPIT IT OUT, making her the last MAMAMOO member to debut as a soloist. She made her comeback with her first extended play on March 16, 2022, titled as 容 : FACE.
Biography[]
Kim Yong-sun was born on February 21, 1991 in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. She has an older sister named Kim Yong-hee (Korean: 김용희).[3] She graduated from Hanyang Women's University with a degree in airline service to be a flight attendant,[4] and later also graduated from Modern K Music Academy for her musical career.[5]
In Hongdae,[6][7] Kim participated in a street busking event and got recruited by a person working in the music industry from the audience, but initially denied due to lack of interest. Later, she tried auditioning multiple times to various companies; on her last attempt, she was accepted by RBW in 2011.[8] The song she sang for her audition is "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston.[9] Kim then debuted under the stage name "Solar" as part of the group MAMAMOO on June 19, 2014.
Career[]
Solar's Career section excludes her activities with MAMAMOO, including sub-unit activities with MAMAMOO+ and Angel Line.
2015[]
Solar appeared on MBC's show King of Mask Singer as "Sunflower" from episode 21 to 22.[10]
Her first soundtrack, "Star", was for the tvN drama Second 20s. She sung the song with Kim Minjae, and it was released on October 2.
Solar released the first part of the Solar Emotion project on October 16, starting the project and (unofficially) her career as a soloist.[11] The single was "Lived Like a Fool", a song originally made by Kim Dohyang.[11] Solar later released the second part and single of the project, "Only Longing Grows", on December 11, a song originally made by Yeojin.[11]
2016[]
Solar featured in Yang Da Il's single "loveagain", which was released on March 29. The song was included in Yang's album Say, released a month later on April 27.
From April 9 to November 19, Solar was on the MBC reality show We Got Married with Eric Nam from episode 316 to 348.[12] Meanwhile, the third part of the Solar Emotion project, "In My Dreams", was released on July 8; it was originally a song by Cho Deokbae.[13]
2017[]
Solar released the fourth part of Solar Emotion on February 21, with its title track being "Happy People". The single was accompanied by an intro, and the song was originally made by Sunflower. The fourth part's release was also on her birthday.[14] for the fifth part of the project, released on October 17, Solar released two singles. The first one was "Alone People", originally a song by Lee Jeongseon; the other one was "Autumn Letter", a song originally made by Kim Minki.[15]
Solar was featured in the the title track of Kiggen's extended play Cloudy. The song is also called "Cloudy", and both EP and song were released on November 15.
On December 2, Solar went on the KBS2 show Battle Trip with Moon Byul to Hong Kong as part of episode 74.[16]
2018[]
Solar released the sixth part of her Solar Emotion project as an extended play on April 24. "Where the Wind Rises", "Nada Sou Sou", "It's Been A Long Time", and "Star Wind Flower Sun" were the songs of the sixth part.[17] An LP version of the EP was also released later, with it containing all the songs released throughout the project.
From April 27 to 29, Solar hosted a solo concert to celebrate the release of Part.6, with the event titled as Emotion Concert Blossom.[18] It was held at Ewha University in Seoul, and she held the concert again on June 16 to 17 at the Sohyang Theater Shinhan Card Hall in Busan.
Solar featured on Ravi's single "LEOPARD", with the song being released on August 22. The song was included in Ravi's extended play RAVI 4th MIXTAPE [NIRVANA II]. Later on, Solar featured on Cosmic Girl's single "LIE YA", which was released on October 13.
2020[]
Solar collaborated with Kassy for the single "A song from the past", which was released on January 16 at 6 PM KST.[19] Later, on April 23 at 6 PM KST, Solar officially debuted as a soloist with the single album SPIT IT OUT and the song "Spit it out";[20][21]
Solar released a song based on her YouTube channel solarsido's first intro, titled as "Ddun Ddun Ddun", on September 17.[22][23] The MV and song were both released on the channel instead of MAMAMOO's YouTube channel.
Solar sung an OST titled "Blue Bird" for the JTBC drama RUN ON, being released on December 24 at 6 PM KST.[24][25]
2021[]
For her birthday on February 21, Solar released a song titled "Please Listen to This in the Evening" on solarsido.[26] She later sung the English version of tvN drama Vincenzo's OST, "Adrenaline". The song was released on March 14 at 6 PM KST.[27]
On April 24, Solar held an online fan meeting for solarsido's 2nd anniversary and the channel's milestone of reaching 3 million subscribers. The event was held at 6 PM KST and broadcasted on interpark, titled as SoLive.[28]
Solar and Moon Byul collaborated for VIBE's project "REVIBE", in which they remake VIBE's song "Promise U". The remake was released on July 28, at 6 PM KST.[29]
Solar released an OST for the SBS drama Lovers of the Red Sky titled as "Always, be with you", and it was released on September 6 at 6 PM KST.[30]
On September 25, Solar appeared and performed on KBS's show Immortal Songs 2 on its 525th episode.[31] She later released a cover of the single "Something Special" by Jang Yeonjoo for the show Yoo Hee-yeol's Sketchbook on October 2.[32]
Solar released an OST for the KBS2 drama School 2021 on December 22, titled as "Winterblooming", at 6 PM KST.[33] She was featured on MC MONG's song "Bubble Love" for the album 20th Anniversary Edition ‘Dark Hole’. The song was released on December 30 at 6 PM KST.[34]
2022[]
On January 4, Solar and Moon Byul released the OST "Bada Boom" for the show Street Dance Girls Fighter, which is a spin-off of the survival show Street Woman Fighter. The song was released at 6 PM KST in the album Street Dance Girls Fighter (SGF) Special.[35]
Solar released her first extended play on March 16 at 6 PM KST,[36] with the album being titled as 容 : FACE.[37] The EP was announced on February 22 at 12 AM KST, the day after her birthday. Previously, Solar confirmed in a solarsido live on December 30, 2021 that she will have to prepare for her solo comeback after Moon Byul's comeback. Solar also released a video of the song "Big Booty" on her channel solarsido for her birthday, which is on February 21; the song was included in the album. On December 28 at 12 AM KST, the cover of the album was revealed, alongside "HONEY", which is FACE's title track.[38]
Solar's OST "Dun Dun Dun" for the tvn drama Kill Heel was released on April 7 at 6 PM KST.[39] Solar was picked to sing the official promotional tourism song "Rest in Gyeonggi-do" (경기도에서 쉬어요) for Gyeonggi Province, and the song's MV was released on April 26 at 12 PM KST.[40]
Solar made her theatrical debut in her first musical, which is the third season of MATA HARI, as the titular leading role "Mata Hari". She was double-casted with the previous seasons' actress for "Mata Hari", Ock Joo-hyun. The musical was announced by production company EMK Musical Company on April 6 with a teaser. The show premiered at the Charlotte Theater in Seoul on May 28 at 7 PM KST,[41][42] and the performances lasted until August 15.[43]
Solar collaborated with JUNGKEY for the song "IMAGE".[44] The song was made as part of the KBS show Listen Up, and was released in the show's EP for the third episode on August 13 at 6 PM KST.[45] Solar also appeared on the show's 3rd episode and performed the song.[46]
Solar joined 722 Studio's project "방구석 캐스팅" and released a remake of the title song of the 2006 music drama 동화 (冬話), called "사랑...후에". She sang the song with Yesung, and it was released on October 20 at 6 PM KST.[47] Previously, Moon Byul sung the single "Trying to say good-bye" for 방구석 캐스팅.
Solar sung the title song for the DJ survival show WET! : World EDM Trend. The song, "Paradise", was released as an OST on December 28 at 6 PM KST,[48] while the show later first started on January 11, 2023.[49]
2023[]
For her birthday on February 21, Solar released a special video to celebrate the occasion. At the end of the video, there is a small video of her new birthday song, which is titled as "LLL" (which is the abbreviated form of "Loved, Loving, will Love").[50] The song is part of MAMAMOO+'s upcoming single album ACT 1, SCENE 1, which will be released on March 29 at 6 PM KST.[51]
Solar sung an OST for the tvn drama Pandora: Beneath the Paradise, which first broadcasted on March 11.[52] The song's title is "Eternal", and it was released on March 12 at 6 PM KST.[53]
"It's Been A Long Time" has been included as an OST of the 2023 film Cobweb, in which an official MV was released on September 8 prior to the film's release on September 27.[54] Solar is also included as a judge of the wavve show VEILED MUSICIAN, which first broadcasted on September 22 at 7 PM KST.[55][56] Solar then released her new OST "EXIT" for the SBS drama The Escape of the Seven on September 23, 2023 at 6 PM KST.[57]
On November 30 at 6 PM KST, Solar released a new version of the song "Décalcomanie" with contestant "Jangwi-dong Nuclear Punch", done as part of the VEILED MUSICIAN show.[58]
2024[]
It was announced on November 15, 2023 that Solar will be staring in another musical, which is the Korean version of the French musical Notre-Dame de Paris, produced by Mast Production. Solar is casted in the role of Esmeralda alongside Yuria and Jung Yoo-ji, and her first show was on January 25.[59] The musical itself starts on January 24 and will continue until March 24, taking place at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.[60] Solar is also confirmed to be one of the judges of Mnet's show Build Up: Vocal Boy Group Survival (빌드업 : 보컬 보이그룹 서바이벌), which first broadcasted on January 26 at 10 PM KST.[61]
After nearly 6 years, a new installment of the project Solar Emotion was finally announced via a video teaser on January 10. Part.7 was released on January 18 at 6 PM KST,[62] and "Love Has Gone" is its title track;[63] the song is originally by Kim Kwang-seok.[64] On January 15 at 12 AM KST, a fan meeting for Solar's birthday was announced, entitled "SOLAR FAN MEETING [HAPPY SOLAR DAY]". The event took place on February 21 at 8 PM KST, the venue being the Ilchi Art Hall in Seoul.[65]
