Kim Yong-sun (Korean: 김용선), commonly known by her stage name Solar (Korean: 솔라), is the leader of South Korean girl group MAMAMOO, and is in charge of the group's main vocals. Additionally, she is a member of MAMAMOO's official sub-unit MAMAMOO+.
Solar started her solo career on April 23, 2020 with the single album SPIT IT OUT, making her the last MAMAMOO member to debut as a soloist. Previously, Solar has made unofficial solo releases with installments of the Solar Emotion project, which she started in 2015 and has continued to this day. She made her comeback with her first extended play on March 16, 2022, titled as 容 : FACE. After 2 years, Solar released her second extended play COLOURS on April 30, 2024. A year later on April 2, she released her second single album WANT. On June 11, 2025, Solar made her official Chinese debut with the digital single "Floating Free"; the single's physical album was released later on July 4th alongside the song's solo version which was released as a digital single.
Solar has also ventured into musical theatre. She debuted in the 2022 season of MATA HARI, starring as the titular character, and did so again in the 2024 season. Another musical she appeared in is Notre-Dame de Paris, in which she took on the role of Esmeralda.
Her upcoming release is the movie The Cursed: Insatiable Desires.
Biography[]
Kim Yong-sun was born on February 21, 1991 in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. She has an older sister named Kim Yong-hee (Korean: 김용희).[3] She graduated from Hanyang Women's University with a degree in airline service to be a flight attendant,[4] and later also graduated from Modern K Music Academy for her musical career.[5]
In Hongdae,[6][7] Kim participated in a street busking event and got recruited by a person working in the music industry from the audience, but initially denied due to lack of interest. Later, she tried auditioning multiple times to various companies; on her last attempt, she was accepted by RBW in 2011.[8] The song she sang for her audition is "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston.[9] Kim then debuted under the stage name "Solar" as part of the group MAMAMOO on June 19, 2014.

2015[]
Solar appeared on MBC's show King of Mask Singer as "Sunflower" from episode 21 to 22.[10]
Her first soundtrack, "Star", was for the tvN drama Second 20s. She sung the song with Kim Min-jae, and it was released on October 2.
Solar released the first part of the Solar Emotion project on October 16, starting the project and (unofficially) her career as a soloist. The single was "Lived Like a Fool", a song originally made by Kim Do-hyang. Solar later released the second part and single of the project, "Only Longing Grows", on December 11, a song originally made by Yeojin.[11]
2016[]
Solar featured in Yang Da Il's single "loveagain", which was released on March 29. The song was included in Yang's album Say, released a month later on April 27.
From April 9 to November 19, Solar was on the MBC reality show We Got Married with Eric Nam from episode 316 to 348.[12] Meanwhile, the third part of the Solar Emotion project, "In My Dreams", was released on July 8; it was originally a song by Cho Deok-bae.[13]
2017[]
Solar released the fourth part of Solar Emotion on February 21, with its title track being "Happy People". The single was accompanied by an intro, and the song was originally made by Sunflower. The fourth part's release was also on her birthday.[14] for the fifth part of the project, released on October 17, Solar released two singles. The first one was "Alone People", originally a song by Lee Jeong-seon; the other one was "Autumn Letter", a song originally made by Kim Min-ki.[15]
Solar was featured in the the title track of Kiggen's extended play Cloudy. The song is also called "Cloudy", and both EP and song were released on November 15.
On December 2, Solar went on the KBS2 show Battle Trip with Moon Byul to Hong Kong as part of episode 74.[16]
2018[]
Solar released the sixth part of her Solar Emotion project as an extended play on April 24. "Where the Wind Rises", "Nada Sou Sou", "It's Been A Long Time", and "Star Wind Flower Sun" were the songs of the sixth part.[17] An LP version of the EP was also released later, with it containing all the songs released throughout the project.
From April 27 to 29, Solar hosted a solo concert to celebrate the release of Part.6, with the event titled as Emotion Concert Blossom.[18] It was held at Ewha University in Seoul, and she held the concert again on June 16 to 17 at the Sohyang Theater Shinhan Card Hall in Busan.
Solar featured on Ravi's single "LEOPARD", with the song being released on August 22. The song was included in Ravi's extended play RAVI 4th MIXTAPE [NIRVANA II]. Later on, Solar featured on Cosmic Girl's single "LIE YA", which was released on October 13.
2020[]
Solar collaborated with Kassy for the single "A song from the past", which was released on January 16 at 6 PM KST.[19] Later, on April 23 at 6 PM KST, Solar officially debuted as a soloist with the single album SPIT IT OUT and the song of the same name, "Spit it out".[20]
Solar released a song based on her YouTube channel solarsido's intro jingle, titled as "Ddun Ddun Ddun", on September 17.[21][22] The MV and song were both released on the channel instead of MAMAMOO's YouTube channel.
Solar sung an OST titled "Blue Bird" for the JTBC drama RUN ON, being released on December 24 at 6 PM KST.[23][24]
2021[]
For her birthday on February 21, Solar released a song titled "Please Listen to This in the Evening" on solarsido.[25] She later sung the English version of "Adrenaline", an OST from tvN drama Vincenzo; the song was released on March 14 at 6 PM KST.[26]
On April 24, Solar held an online fan meeting for solarsido's 2nd anniversary and the channel's milestone of reaching 3 million subscribers. The event was held at 6 PM KST and broadcasted via interpark, titled as "SoLive".[27]
Solar and Moon Byul collaborated for VIBE's project "REVIBE", in which they remake VIBE's song "Promise U". The remake was released on July 28, at 6 PM KST.[28]
Solar released an OST for the SBS drama Lovers of the Red Sky titled as "Always, be with you", and it was released on September 6 at 6 PM KST.[29]
On September 25, Solar appeared on KBS's show Immortal Songs 2 on its 524th episode, performing the song "With You", which was originally a 1972 song of the same name by Nam Jin.[30][31] She later released a reinterpretation of the song "Something Special" by Jang Yeon-joo for the show Yoo Hee-yeol's Sketchbook on October 2;[32] a week later on October 9, she released another reinterpretation for the show, which is the song "Dream of a square" by W.H.I.T.E.[33]
Solar released an OST for the KBS2 drama School 2021 on December 22, titled "Winterblooming", at 6 PM KST.[34] She was also featured on MC MONG's song "Bubble Love" in the album 20th Anniversary Edition ‘Dark Hole’, the song and album being released on December 30 at 6 PM KST.[35]
2022[]
On January 4, Solar and Moon Byul released the OST "Bada Boom" for the show Street Dance Girls Fighter, which is a spin-off of the survival show Street Woman Fighter. The song was released at 6 PM KST in the album Street Dance Girls Fighter (SGF) Special.[36]
Solar released her first extended play on March 16 at 6 PM KST, with the album being titled as 容 : FACE. The EP was announced on February 22 at 12 AM KST, the day after her birthday.[37][38] Previously, Solar confirmed in a solarsido live on December 30, 2021 that she will have to prepare for her solo comeback after Moon Byul's comeback. Solar also released a video of the song "Big Booty" on her channel solarsido for her birthday, which is on February 21; the song was included in the album. On February 28 at 12 AM KST, the album artwork of 容 : FACE revealed, alongside "HONEY", which is the album's title track.[39]
Solar's OST "Dun Dun Dun" for the tvn drama Kill Heel was released on April 7 at 6 PM KST.[40] Solar was picked to sing the official promotional tourism song "Rest in Gyeonggi-do" (경기도에서 쉬어요) for Gyeonggi Province, and the song's MV was released on April 26 at 12 PM KST.[41]
Solar made her theatrical debut in her first musical, which is the third season of MATA HARI, as the titular leading role "Mata Hari". She was double-casted with the previous seasons' actress for "Mata Hari", Ock Joo-hyun. The musical was announced by production company EMK Musical Company on April 6 with a teaser. The show premiered at the Charlotte Theater in Seoul on May 28 at 7 PM KST, Solar's own debut stage being that same date.[42][43] The performances lasted until August 15. Solar's performance as "Mata Hari" received positive reviews from the public and critics, praising her unique and powerful vocals, splendid dance performance, and delicate emotional lines; Solar's mature and stable performance even made it hard to believe that this was her first musical challenge.[44][45][46] For her role as "Mata Hari", Solar received the nomination of Best Newcomer Award (Female) in the 7th Korea Musical Awards.[47]
Solar collaborated with JUNGKEY for the song "IMAGE (5:52 am)" as part of the KBS show Listen Up.[48] The song was released in the show's EP for the third episode on August 13 at 6 PM KST,[49] and Solar also appeared on the show performed the song on said episode.[50]
Solar participated in 722 Studio's project "방구석 캐스팅" and released a remake of "사랑...후에", which is the title song of the 2006 music drama 동화 (冬話). She sang the song with Yesung, and it was released on October 20 at 6 PM KST.[51]
Solar sung the title song for the DJ survival show WET! : World EDM Trend. The song, "Paradise", was released as an OST on December 28 at 6 PM KST,[52] while the show later premiered on January 11, 2023.[53]
2023[]
For her birthday on February 21, Solar released a special video to celebrate the occasion. At the end of the video, a small clip of her new birthday song was featured, which is titled as "LLL"; it is the abbreviated form of "Loved, Loving, will Love".[54] The song is part of MAMAMOO+'s single album ACT 1, SCENE 1, which was released on March 29 at 6 PM KST.[55]
Solar sung an OST for the tvn drama Pandora: Beneath the Paradise, which first broadcasted on March 11.[56] The song's title is "Eternal", and it was released on March 12 at 6 PM KST.[57]
Solar's "It's Been A Long Time" was included as an OST of the 2023 film Cobweb, in which an official MV of the song was released on September 8 prior to the film's release on September 27.[58] Solar also became a judge of the wavve show MUSICIAN, which first broadcasted on September 22 at 7 PM KST.[59] Solar then released an OST, titled "EXIT", for the SBS drama The Escape of the Seven on September 23 at 6 PM KST.[60]
On November 30 at 6 PM KST, Solar released a new version of the song "Décalcomanie" with contestant "Jangwi-dong Nuclear Punch", done as part of the VEILED MUSICIAN show.[61]
2024[]
It was announced on November 15, 2023 that Solar will be starring in another musical, which is the Korean version of the French musical Notre-Dame de Paris, produced by Mast Production. Solar is casted in the role of "Esmeralda" alongside Yuria and Jung Yoo-ji, and her first show started on January 25.[62] The musical itself started on January 24 and continued until March 24, taking place at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.[63] Solar was also confirmed on December 27, 2023 to be one of the judges of Mnet's show Build Up: Vocal Boy Group Survival, which first started broadcasting on January 26 at 10 PM KST.[64]
After nearly 6 years, a new installment of the project Solar Emotion was finally announced via a video teaser on January 10.[65] Part.7 was released on January 18 at 6 PM KST with "Love Has Gone" as its title track, a song originally by Kim Kwang-seok.[66][67]
On January 15 at 12 AM KST, a fan meeting for Solar's birthday was announced, entitled "SOLAR FAN MEETING [HAPPY SOLAR DAY]". The event took place on February 21 at 8 PM KST, the venue being the Ilchi Art Hall in Seoul.[68]
After the Seoul performances, Solar appears on additional shows of Notre-Dame de Paris in other locations: Busan at the Sohyang Theater from March 29 until April 7,[69] Daegu at the Keimyung Arts Center from April 12 to April 21,[70] Jinju at the Gyeongnam Culture & Art Center from May 17 to 19,[71] Ulsan at the Ulsan Culture & Arts Center from May 24 to 26,[72] and Daejeon at the Daejeon Art Hall from June 7 to 9.[73]
Solar's portrayal of "Esmeralda" in Notre-Dame de Paris received favorable reviews from critics. Her talents, such as unrivaled explosive vocal range, dancing skills that captivate the audience, and captivating eyes and gestures, all stand out, especially when skillfully performing Esmeralda's theme songs "Bohémienne" and "Vivre". The fact that Notre-Dame de Paris is a sung-through musical, as in performed only through singing and no dialogue, is also a plus for Solar, as it helps in developing her musical know-how.[74][75] Solar was nominated in the category of Rookie of the Year for this role in the 18th Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF), which marks her second nomination as a musical actress.[76]
On April 8 at 12 AM KST, a logo motion video was released, serving as the teaser for Solar's new mini album COLOURS. The album was released on April 30 at 6 PM KST,[77] and "But I" serves as the title track, as revealed through the album track list.[78] On April 13, an exhibition for the album was announced, titled as Solar 2nd Mini Album [COLOURS] : the exhibit. The event was held at 4LOG in Seoul from April 27 to May 7, and there are multiple sessions per day.[79][80] The performance video of the track "Colors" was also released on May 6 at 6 PM KST.[81]
On May 7, the "Solar 2ND CONCERT [COLOURS]" was announced, which coincided with the last day of Solar's exhibition.[82] Then, on May 10, it was revealed with a scheduler that the concert is a tour. All of the concert locations thus far take place in 2024, with the revealed cities aside from Seoul being: Manila, Kaohsiung, Kawasaki (dubbed as simply Japan), Hong Kong, and Singapore.[83] Later, on May 26, a new scheduler for the tour was revealed with two additional locations: Taipei and Macau.[84] Solar is also part of KBS2's reality competition show Make Mate 1 as a judge and coach, and the show first broadcasted on May 15.[85]
The tour's first concert took place at the BLUE SQUARE Mastercard Hall in Seoul from June 1 to June 2. In the same month, the tour's second concert was held on the 16th at The Theatre at Solaire in Manila, and then the third on the 22nd at Kaohsiung's Kaohsiung Music Center. The fourth concert was at the Culttz Kawasaki in Japan, lasting from July 28 to July 29. The next three concerts were held in July, with the fifth taking place at AsiaWorld–Expo's Runway 11 in Hong Kong on the 7th, the sixth concert taking place at the Taipei International Convention Center in Taipei on the 14th, and the seventh concert taking place at Singapore's Capitol Theatre on the 27th. The eighth and last concert takes place at the Broadway Theatre in Macau on October 6.
According to RBW's semiannual report, Solar alongside Moon Byul have renewed their exclusive contracts with the label for 3 years, spanning from June 18, 2024 to June 17, 2027.[86] Her first release after the contract reneweal is the soundtrack for the second season of Netflix drama Gyeongseong Creature, titled as "LEAN". The song was released in the OST album on September 27 at 6 PM KST.[87]
Solar will be making her debut as a movie actress in Gory: A Horror Tale (고리: 어 호러 테일), a supernatural thriller directed by Hong Won-ki. The film is reportedly in post-production and is set to release in 2025.[88][89] On October 11, EMK Musical released the first teaser of the fourth season of MATA HARI, two years after the previous season. Solar is revealed alongside Ock Joo-hyun to reprise their double-casted role as "Mata Hari". The season premiered on December 5 of the same year at the LG SIGNATURE Hall of LG Arts Center Seoul, running until its last performance on March 2, 2025.[90][91]
On October 14, the eighth installment of the Solar Emotion project was announced with a teaser, its release being October 29 at 6 PM KST.[92] The album's title track is the song "First Love", originally a Japanese song by Hikaru Utada, and there is also the b-side "Love Letter" which is originally a song called "I Will Give Everything to You" (나 그대에게 모두 드리리) by Lee Jang-hee.[93] Later on November 11, the song was announced to be temporarily discontinued, being taken down from music streaming services while its MV on YouTube is set to private; RBW claims that this is due to internal circumstances.[94] This is later confirmed to be a copyright issue, and that the song is permanently discontinued from service.[95]
On October 21, the 2024 Solar's TALK CONCERT [Topic Discovery] was announced, taking place at the Concert Hall of Yonsei University's Centennial Memorial Hall in Seoul. The event was held with two sessions on November 17, the first at 1 PM KST and the second at 5 PM KST.[96][97]
2025[]
On November 21, 2024, another talk concert show was announced. Its title is Solar's TALK CONCERT [Topic Discovery] in TAIPEI, and it was held on January 12 in Taipei, Taiwan at the Legacy TERA. Like the previous one in Seoul, this show has two sessions, the first at 1 PM TST and the second at 6 PM TST.[98]
The poster for Solar's debut film, 고리: 어 호러 테일, was revealed on March 8. Its official English title is The Cursed: Insatiable Desires and its release is in the third quarter of 2025. She stars in it alongside other actors such as Yoo Jae-myung, Moon Chae-won, and Seo Young-hee.[99][100]
On March 17, Solar's second official single album WANT was announced with a logo motion video. The album was released on April 2 at 6 PM KST with a title track of the same name.[101][102]
A coming up poster of the single "Floating Free" was released on May 19. The single, released on June 11, is Solar's official solo debut release in Taiwan and in Mandarin Chinese.[103] It was revealed through a scheduler that the single is a pre-release of her album of the same name, which was later released on July 4.[104] As revealed through the teasers, Solar is collaborating with singer-songwriter 9m88 for her single.[105] On May 20, the Solar FAN CONCERT [Floating Free : Between] in TAIPEI was announced. The event was held at the Taipei International Convention Center in Taipei, Taiwan on June 22.[106] On July 1, 2025, the song "Floating Free (Solar Ver.)" was announced to be released as a digital single on the same day as the album, which is on July 4, but specifically at 12 AM TST.[107]
