Moon Byul-yi (Korean: 문별이), commonly known by her stage name Moonbyul (Korean: 문별) which is stylized officially as Moon Byul (or sometimes MoonByul), is a member of South Korean girl group MAMAMOO, and is in charge of the group's rap and performance. Additionally, she is a member of MAMAMOO's official sub-unit MAMAMOO+ and the former leader of the project group Girls Next Door.

Moon Byul started her solo career on May 23, 2018 with the single album SELFISH, making her the second MAMAMOO member to debut as a soloist. She released her first extended play Dark Side of the Moon on February 14, 2020, and then the repackage album titled 門OON : REPACKAGE on May 29, 2020. Moon Byul made her comeback after almost 2 years on January 19, 2022 with the release of her second EP 6equence, and she released her second single album C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap) not long afterwards on April 28, 2022. For her birthday on December 22, 2022, Moon Byul released the special single album The Present. Moon Byul released her first studio album on February 20, 2024, entitled Starlit of Muse. She made her Japanese debut with the digital single album Aurora.

Biography[]

Moon Byul-yi was born on December 22, 1992 in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do. She has two younger sisters and is the eldest child. She graduated from Wonmi High School, and later from the Paekche Institute of the Arts after majoring in the media music department.[4] She also studied at the KHmusic academy as a trainee.[5]

Moon's dream to be a singer started in the 3rd year of middle school[6] after watching TVXQ!'s "Rising Sun" performance,[7][8] and then later following Taeyeon's footsteps to be an idol.[9] She auditioned into multiple agencies before being accepted into RBW in 2011. She originally trained as a vocalist, but accepted switching to being a rapper to make her debut.[6] Moon then debuted under the stage name "Moon Byul" as part of the group MAMAMOO on June 19, 2014.

Moon Byul's Career section excludes her activities with MAMAMOO, including sub-unit activities with MAMAMOO+ and Rapper Line.

2015[]

Moon Byul featured on the title track of U Sung-eun's extended play 2nd MINI ALBUM, titled as "Nothing", which was released on October 13 alongside the album.

2017[]

Moon Byul appeared on the variety show program Idol Drama Operation Team as one of its seven main cast members; the members are all female idols from different girl groups. She, along with the other six, debuted as the project group Girls Next Door (옆집소녀) with the single "Deep Blue Eyes" on July 14.

On December 2, Moon Byul went on the KBS2 show Battle Trip with Solar to Hong Kong in the show's 74th episode.[10]

2018[]

On May 23, Moon Byul officially debuted as a soloist with the single album SELFISH and its title track of the same name, with the song later being included in MAMAMOO's extended play RED MOON.[11] The song was a collaboration single with Seulgi.

Moon Byul later appeared on MBC's King of Mask Singer as "Swan" on episode 179.[12]

2019[]

To celebrate her birthday on December 22, Moon Byul released a song titled "Snow".[13] The song is later included in her first extended play.

2020[]

Moon Byul released a collaboration single with Punch on February 4, titled "Weird Day". On February 14, Moon Byul released her first extended play which is titled Dark Side of the Moon, with the single "Eclipse" as its title track; "Weird Day" is also included in the EP.[14] Moon Byul and Punch collaborated again for the song "Say Yes", which was released on May 27.[15]

On May 29, Moon Byul released the repackage album 門OON : REPACKAGE, with the single "Absence" as its title track. 門OON : REPACKAGE's Kihno version features all the songs in Dark Side of the Moon.[16] Moon Byul held an online concert on V Live for the album, titled "1st Ontact Live '門OON'", on May 30. Later on June 12, Moon Byul was featured on JeA's single "Greedyy".[17]

On her birthday at December 22, Moon Byul announced the release of the song "A miracle 3days ago".[18] The MV for the song was released at 8 PM KST on the same day.[19]

2021[]

Moon Byul featured in Bumkey's single titled "The Lady", which was released on May 2 at 6 PM KST.[20]

Solar and Moon Byul featured in VIBE's project "REVIBE", in which they remake VIBE's song "Promise U". The remake was released on July 28, at 6 PM KST.[21] Later on August 14, Moon Byul released the collaboration single "Me Without You" with Xydo at 6 PM KST.[22]

Moon Byul was included in the singer lineup for webtoon OSTs, and those songs are released by contents company RIDI. Moon Byul and Gaho sung the OST "Half of Half" for the webtoon Hanyang Diaries, and it was released on October 7 at 6 PM KST.[23][24]

On December 3 at 12 AM, a short video titled "6ix" was released, featuring Moon Byul; it is the teaser of her upcoming solo release.[25] Her comeback was on January 19 of 2022 with a new extended play, titled as 6equence.[26][27] The previously released song, titled "Intro : SYNOPSIS", was included in the EP. 6equence has two pre-released singles: "G999" featuring Mirani which was released on December 13, and "Shutdown" featuring Seori which was released on December 30; both songs' release time were at 6 PM KST.

On December 21, Moon Byul uploaded a song for her birthday on her YouTube channel, known as "CHEMISTRY", at 4 PM KST.[28]

2022[]

On January 4, Solar and Moon Byul released the OST "Bada Boom" for the show Street Dance Girls Fighter, which is a spin-off of the survival show Street Woman Fighter. The song was released at 6 PM KST in the album Street Dance Girls Fighter (SGF) Special.[29]

The title track of 6equence was revealed on January 6, named as "LUNATIC".[30] Moon Byul's second EP 6equence was then released on January 19 at 6 PM KST.[31] Moon Byul then held a mini concert for 6equence, with the event being titled as Director's cut : 6equence. The concert was held on March 5 at 6 PM KST, and on March 6 at 5 PM KST.[32] The first day was an offline-only event, and the second day was both offline and online. The offline venue is at the Blue Square Mastercard Hall in Seoul, and the online platform is provided by interpark.

Moon Byul joined 722 Studio's project "방구석 캐스팅" and released a remake of Yountoven's song "Trying To Say Goodbye" (서툰 이별을 하려 해) on March 28 at 6 PM KST.[33] She has previously released an unofficial cover of the song in 2020,[34] and briefly teased about the new cover in a V LIVE broadcast.[35]

On March 29, RBW confirmed that Moon Byul will make her comeback with a new album in April.[36] On April 12 at 12 AM KST, it was revealed that the album is a single album titled C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap), and it was released on April 28 at 6 PM KST. The album's title track is a single of the same name.[37]

Moon Byul held her third solo concert on August 20, which is a special Japanese event based on her previous concert Director's cut : 6equence. The concert, titled as "Director's Cut : Japan Special Live", had two sessions: the first session at 2 PM JST, and the second one at 6 PM JST.[38] It is also the first international concert that she held.

Moon Byul is a cast member and contestant of JTBC's music survival show Another Universe, alongside 7 other female idols. The contestants, who are all rappers, compete against each other to showcase their vocal abilities; Moon Byul's title in the show is "The Emperor".[39] The song Moon Byul performed in episode 3, "Congratulations" (originally by DAY6), was released digitally on September 14 at 12 PM KST.[40] The song Moon Byul and EXY performed as the unit "SQS" in episode 4, "Energetic" (originally by Wanna One), was released digitally on September 21 at 12 PM KST.[41] The song Moon Byul performed in episode 6, "I'll throw it away (ver. DISCO)" (produced by Park Myung-soo and Yoo Jae-hwan), was released digitally on October 12 at 12 PM KST.[42] Moon Byul performed the song "Refuge" (originally by PSY) in episode 9, however, it won't be officially released on music sites or digitally.[43] In episode 10, which aired on November 9, Moon Byul won Another Universe and became its champion after winning the final round with the song "COMMA";[44] the digital release of the song took place the same day at 12 PM KST.[45] As reward for winning the show, Moon Byul had a solo performance in the 37th Golden Disk Awards, and she will also sing an OST for a JTBC drama .[46]

Moon Byul featured in a song from AleXa's mini album Girls Gone Vogue, with its title being "Star".[47] The album's release was on November 11 at 12 PM KST.[48]

For her birthday on December 22, Moon Byul released a special single album, titled as The Present. Its teaser poster was revealed on December 8 at 12 AM KST, and then its cover art on December 12 at 12 AM KST.[49] The single album included "A miracle 3days ago" and "CHEMISTRY" which are Moon Byul's previously released birthday songs, as well as a new song called "PRESENT" as its title track.[50] The album was released on 6 PM KST.[51] On the same day, Moon Byul also held a fans greeting event, titled as "the happy B-day present". The event was held at the YES24 Live Hall in Seoul, and started at 8 PM KST.[52]

2023[]

As the winning prize of the show Another Universe, Moon Byul performed at the 37th Golden Disk Awards, which took place on January 7.[53] However, Moon Byul's GDA performance was pre-recorded since the first day of the MY CON concert in Hong Kong coincided with the award show's date. According to RBW, the date for the Hong Kong concert had already been fixed before Moon Byul's win in Another Universe.[54] On January 5, Moon Byul was officially announced as being part of the artist lineup by the award show.[55]

Moon Byul featured in David Yong's digital single "Maybe Love", which was released on April 12 at 6 PM KST.[56]

On October 28 at 6 PM KST, Moon Byul released her OST for the JTBC drama Strong Girl Nam-soon, titled "Love Blooms".[57] The song is also Moon Byul's first truly solo-sung OST, as the ones she did before have been collaborations with other artists.

Moon Byul is featured in the song "Block123" from Giuk's mini album Rise Waves (現像 : 소년의 파란), which was released on November 15 at 6 PM KST.[58]

For her birthday on December 22, Moon Byul released a special song to celebrate it, titled as "11:11". Its MV was uploaded on her YouTube channel moonbyul2da, exactly at 11:11 AM KST.[59]

2024[]

On January 23 at 12 AM KST, a logo motion video was released as a teaser for Moon Byul's first full album Starlit of Muse. The album release date is on February 20 at 6 PM KST.[60] In tandem with the album's theme of the Muses, Moon Byul held an exhibition called Moon Byul 1st Full Album [Starlit of Muse] exhibition at the space SOPHORA EVENT HALL in Seoul. The event lasted from February 15 to February 20, and there were multiple sessions per day (sans the last day, which only had 1 session).[61] The album's pre-released song is called "Think About", and the MV was released on February 7 at 12 AM KST.[62] As revealed through the track list, "Think About" is one of the album's two title tracks alongside "TOUCHIN&MOVIN".[63]

On February 29 at 12 AM KST, Moon Byul's first world tour titled "Moon Byul 1ST WORLD TOUR [MUSEUM : an epic of starlit]" was announced.[64] The tour's scheduler revealed the cities to be: Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Osaka, and Tokyo.[65] Moon Byul's first concert took place at the KBS Arena in Seoul from March 23 to March 24.[64] The next three concerts are held in April, with the second concert taking place at the Taipei International Convention Center in Taipei on the 7th, the third concert at the Capitol Theatre in Singapore on the 13th, and the fourth concert at the Macpherson Stadium in Hong Kong on the 20th. Lastly, the three remaining concerts took place in May: the fifth concert at the Kaohsiung Music Center in Kaohsiung, the sixth at the Zepp Namba in Osaka, and the seventh and currently last concert at the Zepp DiverCity in Tokyo.[65] On March 21, an additional date for the Hong Kong concert was announced, which is April 19.[66] An additional date for the Kaohsiung concert was also announced on April 21, the date being May 5.[67] The tour will be continued in other regions during the summer.[68]

On May 15, Moon Byul's collaboration OST with Whee In was released at 6 PM KST. The song is titled "Frankly Speaking", and it was released for the JTBC drama of the same name, Frankly Speaking.[69]

On June 11, a show in Macau was announced for the MUSEUM : an epic of starlit tour along with the newest version of the tour's scheduler; this eighth concert took place on August 3.[70]

Moon Byul is featuring in the song "The Light", which was included in the 20th anniversary album titled FLOWER GARDEN of Kim Jae Joong. The album itself was released on June 26 at 6 PM KST.[71][72]

On July 26 at 12 AM KST, Moon Byul's first full repackage album Starlit of Twinkle was announced, and it is overall her second repackage album. Its release was on August 21 at 6 PM KST, and it is the repackaged version of her previous release Starlit of Muse.[73][74] The track list announced on August 6 revealed that the album has an LP version containing the instrumentals of the repackage album's new songs, alongside the tracks of Starlit of Muse; the album's title track is the song "Is This Love?".[75]

According to RBW's semiannual report, Solar alongside Moon Byul have renewed their exclusive contracts with the label for 3 years, spanning from June 18, 2024 to June 17, 2027.[76]

It was revealed on September 28 by Leo Presents that Moon Byul is set to continue her tour in North America in the fall/winter. Tour dates will be announced a week later.[77] On October 2, the new leg was announced with a scheduler, the cities being: Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, Kansas City, Charlotte, Chicago, Montreal, Boston, Jersey City, Philadelphia, Washington, and Tampa.[78]

The next nine concerts take place in November. The ninth concert was held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on the 12th, the tenth concert held at the Gates Concert Hall of the Newman Center for the Performing Arts in Denver on the 15th, the eleventh concert at the Irving Arts Center in Dallas on the 17th, and the twelfth concert at the Folly Theater in Kansas City on the 19th. Then, the thirteenth concert was held at the Dale F. Halton Theater in Charlotte on the 21st, the fourteenth concert at the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago on the 23rd, the fifteenth concert at the Rialto Theatre in Montreal on the 25th, the sixteenth concert at the The Strand Theatre in Boston on the 27th, and the seventeenth concert at the NJCU Center For The Arts in Jersey City on the 29th. Next, eighteenth concert was held at the Temple Performing Arts Center in Philadelphia on December 1, then the nineteenth concert at the Cramton Auditorium in Washington on December 3, and the final and last announced concert was the twentieth concert which was held at the Straz Center Ferguson Hall in Tampa on December 6.[78][79]

Moon Byul held a fan meeting to simultaneously celebrate her birthday and the anniversary of her solo fanclub, SHOOTING STAR, which was aptly named as Moon Byul The first anniversary of Moon Byul & SHOOTING STAR [Twinkle Twinkle]. The event took place with two sessions at the Donghae Culture and Arts Center Grand Theatre of Kwangwoon University in Seoul.[80] On December 21, she released a teaser for her new birthday song on moonbyul2da, titled "Make It Christmas".[81] The song was then released on December 22 at 12:22 AM KST.[82]

2025[]

On December 5, 2024, Moon Byul's official Japanese debut single was announced, titled "Aurora". It was released on February 5 at 12 AM JST. Additionally, there are release events held in Japan to commemorate her debut.[83][84] The single is made up of 3 tracks in total, with the title track being the song "Starlight".[85]
