Name[]

The name "MAMAMOO" originated from the title of an English song that Kim Do-hoon made for Quincy Jones' 2013 Korea concert.[3] RBW's still-nameless girl group, which had 5 members at the time, performed the exclusive song at the concert.[4]

The word "MAMAMOO" itself was only a form of scat singing at first.[5] After an RBW staff suggested to use it, "MAMAMOO" was chosen as the group's name. The original song's lyrics were changed into Korean and became MAMAMOO's debut title track now known as "Mr. Ambiguous".[6]

Officially, the group's name signifies the babbling of a baby, because they aim to make music that would be familiar to people around the world, like the word "mama" that babies would commonly first learn and speak of.[1] Originally, due to the origin of "MAMAMOO" being a form of scat singing, the name had no meaning at first, so it had to be made up into what it currently is now.[5][7]
